A memorial service was held for Mary Leone Higens, 83, on Fri. Jan. 17 at Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Berry officiating. She died January 15 at Winterset Care Center South.

A Madison County resident for most of her life, she was born December 30, 1908 to Lloyd and Cora (Marston) Speer. She married Verne M. Higens on August 8, 1948 at Penn Center Methodist Church in Madison County. She was a homemaker and member of Word of Life Christian Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two sisters, Lucille Payton of Des Moines and Mildred Rowell of Roeland Park, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

The body was cremated, and ashes will be interred in Dexter Cemetery at a later date.
