Services for Martha E. Christensen Nellis, 77, Earlham, who died Oct. 28 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, were held Friday, Oct. 30, at the Earlham Friends Church with the Rev. Eldon Cole officiating. Burial was at the Penn Center Cemetery.

Born Nov. 7, 1909 in Adair County, she was the daughter of Martin and Magdalena Jensen Christensen. She was married to Merl E. Nellis on Dec. 27, 1928 in Oskaloosa and the couple had three children.

They moved to the family farm in the Penn Center area in 1927. Mrs. Nellis was a homemaker and a member of the Earlham Friends Church. She had been a resident of Bethesda Care Center in Winterset for the past two months.

Survivors include her children, Howard and Ellen Nellis of Wichita, Kan., Winifred and Clarence Johnson of Winterset and Bonnie and Max Arnburg of Ankeny, 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and a sister, Christena Petersen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six sisters and four brothers.

Martha E. Christensen Nellis, daughter of Martin and Magdalene Jensen Christensen was born November 7, 1909 in Adair County and passed away October 28, 1987 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Martha was united in marriage to Merl E. Nellis on December 27, 1928, in Oskaloosa and to this union were born three children, Howard, Winifred and Bonnie. They moved to the family farm in the Penn Center area in 1929.

Martha was a devoted homemaker, in the home as well as helping family and friends. Martha was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family. She had been a resident at the Bethesda Care Center in Winterset for the last two months. Martha was a member of the Earlham Friends Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and six sisters, Sophia Floyd, Sena Petersen, Emma Christensen, Mary Johnson, Esther Petersen, Hannah Christensen, and four brothers, Jim, Otto, Chris and Nels Christensen. Her survivors are her children, Howard and Ellen Nellis of Wichita, Kansas, Winifred and Clarence Johnson of Winterset and Bonnie and Max Arnburg of Ankeny, 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one sister Christena Petersen, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nels (Helen) Christensen and Mrs. Roy (Alta) Nellis, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She will be greatly missed by her family and relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.

Reverend Eldon Cole officiated at the funeral services on Friday, October 30, 1987 at the Earlham Friends Church, Earlham, Iowa. Irene Cole was the soloist and played the organ music. Pallbearers were Duane Nellis, Robert Kelley, Wesley Nellis, Darrell Hayden, Phillip Hoffman, Thomas Atkins and David Atkins. Interment was in Penn Center Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
