Melvin L. Davis,a prominent citizen and community leader in Madison County for many years, died at his home in St. Charles Friday, April 23, 1965. Death came suddenly, during a heart attack. He was 50 years of age.
Mr. Davis was a lifetime resident of Madison County He was born at Winterset, April 9, 1915, a son of Henry L. and Nella Hann Davis. His father was the Madison county auditor for many years. He graduated from Winterset high school with the class of 1932.
He was married July 8, 1939, to Phyllis Johnson of St. Charles. They had made their home in St. Charles since 1940. As a young man he was employed in Des Moines with the Connecticut General Insurance Co., remaining with them until he entered the U.S. Army in 1944 for service in a military police unit during World War II.
Since his return from the war, he had operated a service station in St. Charles. For the last 14 years he had operated a school bus there also.
Mr. Davis was active in the Republican party during his adult life. He had served as township committeeman for many years, and for four year headed the party as Madison County Republican chairman. For about 15 years he had served as St. Charles town clerk.
He had been a member of the St. Charles Lions club since 1946, and in recent years had been zone chairman. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, in which he was an officer and a district lecturer and of the Order of Eastern Star, of which he was past worthy patron.
Mr. Davis was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, in which he had taught a Sunday school class at St. Charles for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; a son, Van Melvin and a daughter, Phyllis Jan, both of whom are students at Simpson college in Indianola; and a brother Don C. Davis of San Francisco, Calif.
Funeral services were held Monday from the St. Charles Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. L. L. Root. Burial was made in the St. Charles Cemetery.
