Services for Henry C. Miller, 82, Winterset, who died Feb. 2, 1989 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center were held Monday, Feb. 6, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Lautt officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery. Military graveside services were provided by the American Legion Post No. 184 and VFW Post No.8142.

Mr. Miller, a retired teacher and principal in the Winterset schools, was born in Adams County on May 3, 1906, the son of Fred and Louise Schafroth Miller. He was married to Berniece Cooper on Aug. 6, 1948 at Greeley, Colo. He had lived in Madison County since 1935 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He served on the city park commission for 21 years from 1962-1983. He received a special recognition award from the parks and recreation department in 1984 for his many years of leadership in the care and development of the City Park.

Mr. Miller was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce in 1981.

Mr. Miller was extremely active in a number of organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Lions Club, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Madison County Historical Society. He was responsible for getting the seven covered bridges, Courthouse, buildings at the historical grounds and the North River Stone Schoolhouse on the National Register of Historical Places. He was the author of the booklet, The Delicious Apple 100 years, 1872 to 1972 to commemorate the discovery of the Delicious apple in Madison County.

His membership on the historical society board included serving as president, vice-president and secretary. He was a member of the Veteran's Comm., the city planning and zoning commission, the Madison County Health Planning Council and president of the American Field Service Committee.

He also was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Phi Delta Kappa, state Secondary Principal's Asso, Iowa State Education Asso, National Retired Teacher Asso, the Knights of Pythias, State Historical Society, National Historical Society and the local Environmental Education Foundation.

Survivors include his wife; and a sister, Elsie Bunn of Conrad. He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and two sisters.

Memorials can be made to the Lillard-Miller Scholarship Fund, the county historical society and the First United Methodist Church.
