Clarence Eugene Johnson, 78, of Winterset died of a heart attack Sept. 9, 2000, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today (Wed. Sept. 13) at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Winterset with Dr. Bobby G. Dickerson officiating. Eulogists were Robert Bass and Bill Paull. A Masonic service was performed by Evening Star Lodge 43 in Winterset Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Clarence Johnson was born April 17, 1922, in Winterset to Will Clarence and Goldie Madge (Clark) Johnson. He was a 1939 graduate of Winterset High School, a 1941 graduate of Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Mo., and a 1943 graduate of the University of Iowa. He married Betty Below Wallace on Dec. 9, 1965 in Des Moines. A lifetime resident of Winterset, he was semi-retired as president and chairman of the board of Grip-Tite Manufacturing in Winterset. Clarence served as master of ceremonies and was a member of the chorus for 35 years at the annual Lions Club Show. He was named Outstanding Citizen of the year in 1983, was instrumental in getting the Dr. George Washington Carver Park in Winterset completed, was the parade marshall of the 1955 Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. He was a board member of the local, state and national level for the First Christian Church and served on the chaplaincy board. He also was a member of the Lions Club, Winterset Incentive Network, Farmers & Merchants State Bank Board, Winterset Public Library Board, Ramsey Home Board and the First Christian Church in Winterset. He had served as a city council member, an ambassador with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Madison County Republican Party.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and four brothers. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Green of Winterset; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Christian Church in Winterset. Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
