Josephine Spence, 80, of Winterset died from complications of a stroke Aug. 8, 1998, at Integrated Health Services in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Mary Pope officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.

Mary Josephine Spence was born in Madison County, Iowa on April 14, 1918 to John Spence and Gertrude (Addy) Spence. A lifetime resident of Madison County, Josephine was a retired Des Moines Farm Bureau clerical worker. She was a member of the Studious Moderns, the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset, and was a former Rebekah Lodge member. She also was a 1936 graduate of Winterset High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. She is survived by one brother, Wallace Spence and wife Ruth of Bonita Springs, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.
