Helen Shehan-Burkholder, Winterset

Helen Shehan-Burkholder, 87, of Winterset died Jan. 25, 2003, of pneumonia at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines. Burial was at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Helen Shehan-Burkholdr was born Oct. 28, 1915, in Madison County to George and Tuttsie (Harrison) Hulbert. She had lived in Des Moines before moving to Winterset 10 years ago. She had worked at Lane Bryant before retiring. Helen was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Winterset and the Young at Heart Club. She also was a volunteer at the Winterset Care Center South.

She was preced in death by her parents; her first husband, Wilfred Shehan; and her second husband, Thurston Burkholder.

She is survived by four daughters, Zelma Dilworth, Louise Smith, Blanche Jones and Kathryne Shehan-Ostrand, all of Des Moines; two sons, Jim Shehan and Robert D. Shehan, both of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home in Des Moines.
