Lloyd H. Smith Madison County Superintendent of Schools, died suddenly while working in his garden in Winterset last Saturday evening, July 24, 1971. Mr. Smith was 71 years of age.
He was born the son of Louis L. and Clara Spradlin Smith on Sept. 27, 1899 at Commerce, Missouri. He married Gladys M. Wildebaur on Nov. 7, 1925 at Lennox, South Dakota.
Mr. Smith devoted his life to school work. He came to Madison County 23 years ago to take the position of County Superintendent of Schools, and held that position until his death.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winerset, where he taught Sunday School for 15 years. He was also active in the Lions Club was a life member of the Iowa State Education Assn. and a past president of the State County Superintendent's Association.
Mr. Smith was an active member of the Madison County Historical Society. He compiled and edited a pamphlet entitled "Scenic Madison County and Some of Its Significant History," which was published ten years ago.
Survivors of Mr. Smith include his wife, Gladys, and two daughters, Linda L. Jordan of Iowa City, and Mary Ruth Carpenter of Des Moines. Two grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Leo (Georgia) Lunnemann of Galesburg, Illinois, also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He was also preceded in death by an infant son.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday July 27 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset, with the Rev. Walter A. Samp, officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
