Wayne A. Griffith, Winterset

Wayne Archibald Griffith, 81, died Dec. 21, 2001, of complications of Alzheimer's disease at Winterset Care Center North.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Wayne Griffith was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Madison County to Robert and Bernice (Deets) Griffith. A lifetime resident of Madison County, he had farmed until the early 1960s, when he moved to town. Wayne served as Madison County Auditor for two terms and also served many years as Madison County Assessor. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Winterset Lions Club, Farm Bureau the First United Methodist Church in Winterset and United Methodist Men.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Velma, of Winterset, a son, David Griffith (wife Nancy) of Ely, Minn.; two daughters, Judi Richardson (husband Dale) of Englewood, Colo., and Nancy Anthony (husband Alan) of Macksburg; a stepson, Dave Sanderson (wife Shelley) of Ankeny; three stepdaughters, Evelyn Akers (husband Tim) of Lincoln, Neb., Vicki Ryan of Winterset and Sue Cameron of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Lois Butcher of Indianola; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Winterset, the Winterset Lions Club Foundation or the Alzheimers Association. Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
