Rex Rouse, Winterset

Rex Rouse, 79, of Winterset died of a ruptured aneurysm Sunday, April 12, 1998,at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today (Wed.) April 15 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Jon Gaul officiating. A Masonic service was conducted by the Evening Star Lodge. Burial was at Peru Cemetery, with American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142 providing a military graveside service.

Riley Rexroad Rouse was born July 26, 1918, in Alda, Neb. to Riley R. and Margaret Howell Rouse. He married Josephine Shearer Oct. 22, 1944 in Perry. He was the Sheriff of Madison County from 1955 until his retirement in 1981. He worked at Shearer Bros. General Store in Peru and also owned and operated a garage and service station in Peru. Rex was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post 184, V.F.W. Post 8142, the Madison County Historical Complex and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He served on the Madison County Draft Board, was a post commander in the Masonic Lodge at Peru and Winterset. He was named the 1993 Citizen of the Year.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He is survived by his wife; one son, Fred (wife Joy) of Indianola;one daughter,Linda Hardin (husband Jack), also of Indianola; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Memorial may be directed to the American Legion or to the First United Methodist Church.
