Pfc.Wayne Martens Dies On Battlefield in Korea

Pfc. Wayne N. Martens, 20-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Martens of Madison township was killed in action on Sept. 21, 1952, according to official notification received here last Wednesday.

Pfc. Martens had been serving with the U.S. Army in Korea. The telegram from the U.S. war department contained the information that he had been killed while holding a position attacked by the enemy.

The young soldier had been in the service of his Country only nine months. He took his basic training at Camp Gordon, Ga., and sailed for overseas duty on June 3. After arriving overseas in June he spent a month on Koje Island before being transferred to the Korean mainland, where he was serving with the Second Infantry Division.

Pfc. Martens was born in Madison County and lived here until entering service. He attended school at DeSoto, graduating from the DeSoto high school with the class of 1949. After that he engaged in in farming until entering the military service of his country.

In addition to his father and mother, he is survived by a brother, William D. Martens of Madison township and a sister, Mrs. William G. Niendorf of Van Meter.

Pfc. Martens is the third service man from Madison County who has made the supreme sacrifice on the blood drenched hills of Korea since the outbreak of hostilities there.

Funeral services for Pfc. Wayne Martens, were held Sunday Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson township. Burial was made in the church cemetery with military rites by Green - Rogers post of the American Legion.

Services Sunday for Wayne Martens

Funeral services for Pfc. Wayne Martens, who was killed in action in Korea Sept. 21, will be held Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township.

The Rev. C. G. Meyer, pastor of the church, will conduct the services. Green-Rogers post of the American Legion will participate with military ritual. Burial will be made in the church cemetery.

The body of the young soldier arrived here recently from the Korean battle front, where he sacrificed his life. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Martens of Madison township and was 20 years of age at his death.
