Jane Royce Stromwell passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

She was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Duluth, Minn. to Ruth and Maurice Stromwell, their first child. Maurice, an accountant and later CPA, and Ruth, previously a grade school teacher, moved with Jane to Green Bay, Wis., in 1943. In 1945, the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where sister JoAnn was born in December 1945, as well as brother Peter in 1954, completing the family.

Although handicapped mentally, Jane attended school classes through the eighth-grade. Helped by her mother, she learned to read and write, embroider beautifully, and participated as a Girl Scout.

At age 16, Jane was moved into Woodward State Hospital/School where she resided until 1981. Summerset Haven Residential Care Facility, later called Progressive Options, in Winterset then became Jane’s home where she enjoyed living in a group home. During this time, she did contract work at Innovative Industries and attended the Challenge Center where basic skills and crafts were taught.

In 2001, as the group home was demolished and the residents were relocated, Jane’s new home became Winterset Care Center North where she spent her final years.

No matter where Jane lived, she was greatly loved, always full of joy and happiness, and brought fun and enthusiasm everywhere.

Jane is survived by a sister, JoAnn Peterson of Seattle, Wash., a brother Peter Stromwell of Maple Falls, Wash., three nieces, Shawna Zlab of Everett, Wash., Rachel Peterson of Duarte, Calif., and Leah Davis of Renton, Wash.; a nephew, Erik Peterson of Duarte, Calif., and a brother-in-law, Patrick Peterson of Seattle, Wash.

Graveside services were held today at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Winterset Care Center North. Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice or Genesis Development in Winterset.
