December 2005M. Marie Atherton, 87, died Dec. 7, 2005, at the Community Care Center in Stuart.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Dexter with Pastors Dick Keiser and Jerry Evelsizer officiating. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery.
Marie Atherton was born Feb. 6, 1918, to Walter and Leah (Stanley) Cook of rural Earlham. She was a 1935 graduate of Redfield High School.
Following graduation, she taught country school for a few years. On May 3, 1941, she married Allen Atherton at their home in rural Dexter.
Marie was a member of the DT Club of Dexter, Medley Garden Club and Calvary Assembly of God in Dexter where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also had been a Cub Scout den mother and, for many years, a poll worker on the Dexter Election Board.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Carroll Cook.
She is survived by three sons, Bruce Atherton of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Mark Atherton of Iowa City and Dennis Atherton of Des Moines; two sisters, Helen Heal of Dexter and Velma Barnett of Salem, Ore.; one brother, Wayne Cook of Stuart; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.
