Jerry Williams - Death Strikes Young Athlete

Jerry Williams, 19 years old, of Winterset, collapsed suddenly and died last Thursday, Nov. 1,1956 while engaged in a track workout at Iowa State College at Ames, where he was a student. Jerry was with his twin brother, John, at the time of his death. The boys had been jogging around the track for a few minutes, when Jerry suddenly fainted. Efforts to revive him were unavailing, and he was pronounced dead by an Iowa State college doctor.

The untimely death came as a shock to the entire community of Winterset. He was one of the most popular and highly regarded young men of the community. He was not known to be in anything but the best of health, and had successfully passed a physical examination last spring upon enrolling at Iowa State college. He had fainted several years previouly while engaged in a track workout at the Winterset high school, but had revived promptly on that occasion with no aparent ill effects.

Jerry was a son of Earl and Cleo Clopton Williams of Winterset. He was born here June 15, 1937, and his entire life, until he left for college, was spent on a farm in Douglas township.

He attended Winterset high school where he made an outstanding record in athletics. He played regular halfback on the Husky football team for two years, and played a major role in the strong Winterset track teams during his four years in high school, running the dash events, from the 100 to the 440. In addition to his athletic laurels, he was prominent in F.F.A. and other scholastic activities in high school.

After graduation here with the class of 1955 he entered the State University of Iowa at Iowa City in the autumn of that year. In the spring of 1956 he transferred to Iowa State college at Ames, where he & his brother were again running together as members of the track squad. Last spring Jerry had set an Iowa State college freshman record of 21.8 seconds for the 220-yard dash.

In Winterset, Jerry was a member of the Christian church, and took an active part in youth affairs, both here and at college.

He is survived by his parents, his twin brother, John, and his sister, Mrs. Ardeth Crusan.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Winterset Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Warren Hile. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.
