Harriet Ann Addy

Now the laborer's task is o'er,
Now the battle-day is past;
Now upon the farther shore
Lands the voyager at last.
Father, in Thy gracious keeping
Leave we now Thy servant sleeping.

Harriet Ann, oldest child of John and Nancy Cox was born on November 17, 1870 in Union Township, Madison County, Iowa.

She was married on February 15th, 1893 to Marion E. Addy and they lived in Jefferson township till 1903 when they moved to a new home in Madison township.

Five children were born to those good parents, but the family ties were broken by the death of Mr. Addy on January 5th, 1919. After that time Mrs. Addy carried on with the help of the family till they were all married and had established homes of their own. Even then she continued to live on her land with her only son, Manford, until the time of his death in 1936. In 1944 she retired to Earlham for a well earned rest.

Mrs. Addy was a real pioneer whose faith never failed; she understood what it meant to grow up with the country. She was baptized at the age of 15 and attended Sunday School at the old Stone Schoolhouse before the United Brethren Church in Jefferson township was built. After its dedication she continued to worship there until she moved to Earlham.

Folks knew Mrs. Addy as a cheery and helpful neighbor and a good friend; her life of over eighty years was an example of devoted motherhood, of courageous and industrous living and quiet sweet contentment.

Because of failing health she spent the last few years with her daughters, and after much suffering, which tenderest care could not over come, she passed to her reward on April 12th, 1951 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Marquardt in Earlham.

One sister, Mrs. Beulah Nelson of Vancouver, Washington survives, and the greiving family: Lois Addy College, Huntington Beach, California; Mable Aldrich of Redfield; Blanche Petersen of Earlham, and Myrtle Marquardt of Earlham. Twelve grandchildren, four living great grandchildren and one great grandchild deceased.

Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon, by the pastor the Rev. S. R. Overholser, and burial in the Jefferson township U.B. Cemetery.
