Fred Adkins

Fred Adkins, the son of Geo. and Effie Adkins, was born on February 12, 1905, in Winterset, Iowa, and died at Pitzer, Iowa on July 4, 1966 at the age of 61 years, 4 months and 22 days.

Fred Adkins was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Cox in August of 1934, and was preceded in death by his wife in October of 1956. To this marriage union were born three children: George Lyle Adkins of East Lansing, Michigan; and two daughters, Janice (Mrs Richard D Kile) of Des Moines, and Donna (Mrs Wayne Fastle) of Earlham.

Fred, as he was known to all of those who stopped to visit or to purchase groceries and gas from his store in Pitzer, had been for the past 29 years a friend to the Pitzer community. He was thinking of the community in the part he took within its midst. One of the events to which all looked forward, was the ice cream social at the Pitzer church, and with the coming of darkness, the fireworks display which Fred and others have some years shared with those who have lived in the surrounding area.

He is survived by his two daughters and son, five grandchildren, by his brother, Jim Adkins of Dexter, by his sister Rose Ann McCombs of Phoenix, Arizona, and nieces, nephews and cousins. The death and passing of Fred Adkins is mourned by those many people who have known him down through the years.

FRED O. ADKINS KILLED IN FALL

Slips From 65-Foot High Silo Monday Night at Schafer Farm

Fred o. Adkins, 61, proprietor of the Pitzer general store for many years, was killed Monday night in a fall from a 65-foot high silo on the Marvin Schafer farm, just north of Pitzer.

The accident occurred about 10 p.m. Adkins and Schafer had climbed to the top of the silo on an outside ladder, which has a cage around it. Schafer then descended and walked to some other buildings on the farm. As he did so, he saw Adkins starting to descend. But when he returned he saw Adkins body lodged inside the cage about 25 feet from the ground.

Sheriff Rex Rouse and Dr. Paul Eggleston, Madison county medical examiner, were called to the scene.

Doctor Eggleston reported that indications were that Adkins had fallen a considerable distance down the cage and that injuries received in the fall caused his death.

Mr. Adkins was well known though out his section of the county having operated the grocery store at Pitzer for the last 29 years. He was a life-long resident of the county, having been born in Winterset, Feb 12, 1905, a son of George J. and Effie Armbrest Adkins.

His wife, the former Wilma J. Cox, died in 1956.

Surviving are a son, George L. Adkins of East Lansing, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Kile of Des Moines and Mrs. Wayne Fastle of Earlham; five grandchildren, a brother James Adkins of Dexter and a sister, Mrs. Rose Ann McCombs of Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Collins funeral home in Winterset. The Rev. Donald McKay and the Rev. Charles White will officiate at the services. Burial will be made in the Winterset Cemetery.
