Obituary - Edmund Peed

Edmund Peed was born in Washington County, Ind. March 31, 1827, and died August 25, 1904, at his late residence northwest of Winterset, in Douglas township, aged 77 years, 4 months and 25 days. Madison County loses one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens.

He was married to Miss Eliza White, March 7, 1850; there were three children born to this union, Nancy Jane, Francis Marion, and Charles, and they all survive him with his present wife, to whom he was married Oct. 24, 1894.

He united with the church of Christ at Winterset many years ago and was a faithful member until death claimed him. Failing health kept him from attending church regularly.

The funeral was conducted by John H. Swift, present pastor of the Church of Christ at Winterset, from the home, where a large gathering of old friends and neighbors met to pay their last respects and help comfort the bereaved family. His body was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery beside his first wife, who died nine years ago.

Edmund Peed

The death of Edmund Peed occurred at his home in Douglas township last Thursday night after a protracted illness and his remains were interred in the Winterset cemetery Saturday afternoon. Mr. Peed was another of Madison county's old settlers, the ranks of which are thinning. He was born in Indiana in 1827 and removed to this county in 1856. In 1850 he was married to Miss Eliza White of Indiana and to this union was born three children; Nancy J., Francis M. and Charles T.

The old home farm of which Mr. Peed entered as far back as 1853 was their place of abode until 1890 when they moved to Winterset. In 1895, the wife and mother passed from this life to a better one beyond. In 1897, Mr. Peed again married to Miss Hannah Albertson of Canton, Indiana who survives him. About a year ago they moved back to the farm where it was thought his health would be better but the efficacy of farm life failed to restore his health and he died as above noted.

Mr. Peed was one of the sturdy pioneer farmers of the county, upright and honorable in all his dealings and greatly respected by all. Outside the devoted family, he leaves many friends to mourn his loss.
