Mortuary

Martha Ellen Welty, daughter of Peter and Magdalena Welty, was born in Indiana, January 27, 1851. When a child she came with her parents to Iowa, where her father, one of the pioneer settlers, obtained a tract of land in Webster township, Madison county, about ten miles southwest of Winterset. Here she spent her girlhood and at an early age gave her heart to God and was united with the Evangelical church, which later became known as Oak Grove, services at that time being held at the various homes of the community. Later in life her membership was transferred to the Methodist Episcopal church, located at Pleasant View.

In 1867 she was united in marriage to Miles H. Hart, and to this union nine children were born, four, Edgar Arthur, Sadie May, Beatrice Berteen and Mrs. Florence E. Quick, having preceded her in death. She passed away March 29, 1928, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. J. Hollen, of Indianola, Iowa, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 2 days. She leaves to mourn her loss her aged husband, five children, Mrs. Sylvester Gilbert, of Lorimor; Mrs. Sam Ridout, of Winterset; Mrs. B. J. Hollen, of Indianola, and Arch and Orie, of Winterset; also twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Caroline Hart of Winterset, and many other relatives and friends.

Her Bible meant much to her, and only a few weeks before her death she completed reading of the New Testament in less than a week. She was a faithful mother, a firm believer in God and will be greatly missed by her family and community.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Winterset, Sunday, April 1st. Rev. A. R. Weed, her former pastor, was in charge, assisted by Rev. A. P. Keast. Interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
