Rebecca Ellen Peed, daughter of Matthew and Caroline Kale McGee, was born in Jackson township, Madison County, Iowa, Nov. 1, 1856. When she was a small child the family moved to the old McGee home in Douglas township, which was so well known to the older resident of the county, and is now the Carey farm. She was one of the children born in the early settlement of the county and grew to young womanhood in the days when hospitality and neighborliness were prized among life's highest virtues.
She was united in marriage to Frank Peed March 4, 1879. To this union were born four children, Roy living near Earlham, Ira, living in Adair county; Mrs. Retta Enright, of Crawford township, and Mabel Grace, who died in infancy.
She united with the Winterset Methodist Episcopal church in 1902, of which she is still a member.
After two years of illness she passed away in the home of Mrs. Enright, on Feb. 18, 1926, aged 69 years, 3 months, and 17 days.
She leaves beside her husband and three children two grandchildren and two brothers, John McGee, of Blackwell, Okla, and Lee McGee, of Edgewater, Colo., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Perkins, Winterset
The funeral services were held in the Tidrick funeral home Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton and the burial was in the Rock City Cemetery, Winterset.
