In the death of Mrs. Mary Bell Hutchings on Friday evening, November 9th, the people of Winterset lost an early settler and one of their oldest residents. Mrs. Hutchings was 93 years old last July, and had made her home in this community since 1854. She had been in poor health for several months, and had been critically ill two weeks prior to her death.
Miss Mary Bell was born in Holmes county, Ohio, July 24, 1835, and was educated in that state. In 1854 she came to Winterset with two sisters, Mrs. Burd and the sister who later married Dr. I. L. Tidrick, traveling by stage from Iowa City.
She married in 1856 to Joseph J. Hutchings, who was in the real estate business and was president of the Citizens National bank from 1872 until 1888, the year of his death.
Mrs. Hutchings always took an active interest in the Presbyterian church, and she and her family have long been prominent in the business and social life of Winterset.
The Hutchings had one daughter, Flora, who married Dr. J. H. Wintrode, and they have both been dead for a number of years. The deceased is survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Josephine Thompson with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Mary Krabiel of Winterset, and John Wintrode of St. Petersburg, Florida. She is also survived by a great granddaughter, Mary Bell Thompson.
The Reverend Paul Main Fowler conducted short prayer services at Tidrick's funeral home, Monday afternoon, November 12th, at 1:30 o'clock, and the regular services at the Presbyterian church, at two o'clock. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Page 5, Column 4Mary, the daughter of Robert Bell and Eleanor Harger Bell was born in Holmes county, Ohio, July 24, 1835. She was the eighth child in a family of twelve children.
The family lived in Ohio until Mary was 18 years of age. She and her sister Martha then came west with their sister and husband Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Bird. They came by boat down the Ohio River to St. Louis then up the Mississippi to Keokuk, then by stage to Iowa City and on to Winterset taking six weeks for the journey. On arriving at Winterset they stayed for a little time with Mr. Bird’s brother just east of town, then was in town for the winter.
One year later Martha was married to Dr. L. M. Tidrick and Mary made her home with them until she was married to Joseph J. Hutchings January 28, 1856. One child was born to them, Flora, who when grown became the wife of Dr. J. H. Wintrode and they made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings for many years. Theirs was one of the best known and most hospitable homes in Winterset. Mr. Hutchings died in 1888 and Mrs. Wintrode passed away in 1910 a few months after the death of Dr. Wintrode. Mrs. Hutchings then became mother as well as being grandmother to the three children and that relationship continued till her death.
She was a charter member of the Winterset Eastern Star and later Worthy Matron, and at the time of her death was still an honored member. She was also a charter member of the Women’s Relief Corps and a long time member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. When past 80 years of age she became an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also of the Arc-en Cell club.
She has been almost a life long Christian. She came into the membership of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset by letter on January 23, 1864. She was on the building committee of this church building and has been an ever active and helpful member.
She has been known for many years as a friend of Christ and a friend to many friends. She never lost her interest in life and continued to make friends until her last months. She passed away in her home November 9, 1928, aged 93 years, 3 months and 15 days.
She leaves her three grandchildren, Mrs. Josephine Thompson and Mrs. Clyde Krabiel of Winterset and John Wintrode of St. Petersburg, Florida and one great granddaughter, Mary Bell Thompson.
Rev. Paul Fowler conducted the funeral service in the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon, November 12, 1928. Interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
