Death of Mrs. Malinda Hays

Mrs. Malinda Hays died about ten o'clock, Wednesday morning, April 18th, after a two week's illness with pneumonia. She had been in poor health most of the winter, and had been staying at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. R. Peters, at the home on North First street.

Mrs. Hays came to Madison county with her husband, James F. Hays, in 1868, and they made their home in Douglas township, seven miles northwest of Winterset, until in 1915, when they moved to town. Mr. Hays died in 1920. The deceased was raised near Decatur, Illinois, and it was there that she and Mr. Hays were married, December 9, 1869.

Mrs. C. R. Peters and Roy Hays of Winterset, and Earl of Burbank, California, are the three children who survive Mrs. Hays. She is also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Rev. A. S. Henser will conduct the funeral services at the Peters home, Friday afternoon, April 20, at 2:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Malinda Hays

Phiana Malinda Vance, daughter of John and Sarah Vance, was born March 3, 1851, at Lafayette, Indiana, and moved with her parents to Decatur, Macon county, Illinois, in the year of 1864. She was united in marriage with James F. Hays, at Decatur, Illinois, on December 9, 1869. She and her husband moved to Madison county, Iowa, in 1872, they buying the farm in Douglas township, formerly owned by the father of E. F. Connoran, and she and her husband continued to live there for forty-three years. Her home was noted for its hospitality, its good cheer and neighborly kindness. She and her husband always encouraged their children and those of the neighborhood in their school work, church work and all forms of community service. In her early childhood she was confirmed in the English Lutheran church. In 1915 she and her husband moved to Winterset.

Her husband, James F. Hays, died February 19, 1920. She leaves two sons, Roy Hays of Winterset, and Earl Hays of California, and one daughter, Mrs. C. R. Peters of Winterset, and six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Rev. A. N. Hueser and Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral service in the C. R. Peters home on Friday afternoon, April 20th, and the interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
