Death of Mrs. Charlotte Gordon

Madison county lost another of their real pioneers Monday, May 14th, when Mrs. Charlotte Gordon died at her home in the northeast part of town, at the age of 89 years. Mrs. Gordon was born in Quincy, Illinois, and came here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Clark, in 1846, that year when the first settlers came to Madison county to make their homes. For 81 years her life has been identified with the growth, prosperity and advancing civilization of the community. However, she has been in poor health for a number of years, gradually growing worse the last week.

She was married to John Newton Gordon June 19, 1856, and they located on their farm, one and a half mile west of Winterset. Here their family of ten children were born to them, four of whom are now deceased. She is survived by two sons and a daughter, Arthur and Will, and Mrs. James Turner, of Winterset; and three sons, Nels of Caldwell, Idaho, Ab of Clarinda, and the Rev. N. D. Gordon of Indianola. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith and Mrs. Martha Ballard, who are the last of the family, 24 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

The Rev. F. C. McCallon conducted the funeral services at the Church of Christ, Wednesday, May 16 at two o'clock, and burial was made in the local cemetery.

Charlotte Gordon

Rachael Charlotte Clark, daughter of Caleb and Ruth Clark, was born in Quincy, Illinois, September 23, 1838, and departed this life May 14, 1928, after an illness of long standing, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 21 days.

The deceased came with her parents to Madison county, Iowa, in 1846, and for 81 years her life was identified with the growth, prosperity and advancing civilization of the community.

June 19, 1856, she was united in marriage with John Newton Gordon, and they located on their prairie farm, one and one-half miles west of Winterset. Here they experienced all the toils, hardships and pleasures of pioneer life. Their home was always open to receive everyone in need of shelter, and in the early day the benighted wanderer on the prairie found a place of rest.

While living on this farm their entire family of ten children were born. Albert T. of Winterset, Morgan M. who preceded her in death March 11, 1924, Ella and Lilly, dying in infancy, Newton D. of Indianola; Nelson C. of Caldwell, Idaho; Hallie B. Turner, William and Arthur of this city, and Clarence who died in infancy.

February 28, 1858, she united with the Church of Christ, and has had the welfare of the church at heart at all times. After living a short time on a farm southeast of Winterset, they moved to Winterset where she spent the remainder of her life.

She leaves to mourn her loss two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith and Mrs. Martha Ballard, the last of the family besides five sons, one daughter, 24 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and a host of friends to honor her memory.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ, May 16 at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev. F. C. McCallon and interment was made in the Winterset cemetery
