Ira Peed Dies at Age 96

Ira Lee Peed, one of the remaining descendants of pioneer settlers of Madison County, died Thursday Nov. 17, 1977, at the age of 96 years, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Ira was born in Douglas township August 6, 1881 a son of Francis Marion Peed and Rebecca Ellen McGee. He attended school and Sunday school at Douglas Center and became a member of Winterset United Methodist Church in 1906.

His active life was spent in farming and raising livestock in Madison County, except for a few years in Adair County. Around 1940 he returned to the home farm in Douglas Township where he remained until 1970 when ill health forced him to retire to a nursing home. In 1976 he received a Century Farm Award for the family farm originally owned by his grandfather, M. M. McGee.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Roy, two sisters, Mabel Grace and Retta Enright, and a nephew Robert Enright.

Survivors are three nieces, Virginia Smith of Sacramento, Calif, Mary Welty of Winterset, Ruby Melull of Glenview, Ill., and her three children, Paul, Laura and Carla, several cousins, including George Reinert of Earlham.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Nov. 21, at 10:30 a.m. from Collins Funeral Home, with burial at Winterset Cemetery. Rev.Byron Ayers officiated.
