Nelson Welty Died Saturday

Madison County Resident for Most of Life, Was 76 Years of Age

Nelson Welty, a long-time resident of Madison County, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 4, at a nursing home in Iowa City. He was 76 years of age.

Mr. Welty had been living at West Branch since 1948 He was born on a farm near Winterset, on March 22, 1887, a son of John and Ida Ellsberry Welty. His active life was spent in farming.

He was married at Winterset Dec. 24, 1908,to Hulda Haupt, who preceded him in death last March. A son Merl Welty, was killed in action during World II while serving in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Welty of Winterset and Lawrence Welty of Torrance, Calif.; a daughter Mrs. Pauline Barnhart of West Branch; four grandchildren; and a brother, Cressley Welty, Indianola

Funeral services were held Tuesday from Barker Funeral home in West Branch, with the Rev. Charles F. Haigh, pastor of the West Branch Methodist church officiating. Burial was made in the West Branch Cemetery.
