December 20, 1928Death of George W. Gilleland
George W. Gilleland, a lifelong resident of this county and steward of the Madison county poor farm for the past fifteen years, was stricken with apoplexy late Saturday night and died a few hours later, Sunday, December 16th. Mr. Gilleland had been in seemingly good health and was attending to some sick people when he had his attack.
The deceased was a son of David W. and Nancy J. Gilleland, and was born here in Winterset sixty-one years ago. He was married to Miss Cynthia J. Harrison, September 24th, 1892. She and their son, Albert L. Gilleland of Atlantic, survive him. Mr. Gilliland also leaves two nieces, whom he and Mrs. Gilleland raised, Miss Grace, in the home, and Mrs. Alice Thayer of Norwood, Missouri. He is also survived by two brothers, Otis of Winterset; Fred of Glendale, California, and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Fleck of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Nellie Vincent of Des Moines.
Mr. Gilleland was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and the Knights of Pythias. His work at the county farm has been highly commended, both for his efficient work and his patience in caring for the people.
The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services Wednesday afternoon, December 19th, at the Methodist church, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The various offices in the court house were closed during the services.

George William Gilleland, son of David W. and Nancy J. Gilleland, was born at Winterset, Iowa, September 8, 1867, and passed away December 16, 1928, aged 61 years, 3 months and 8 days.
On September 24, 1892, he was married to Cynthia J. Harrison and to this union was born one son, Albert L., of Atlantic, Iowa. Besides the widow and one son he leaves three nieces, one of whom, Alice Thayer, was raised from infancy and Grace and Goldie Harrison, who have made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Gilleland for more than ten years, during their girlhood all of whom seemed more like daughters of the family on account of the close relationship that has always existed between them; 4 grandchildren, 2 sons of Albert and wife, and one boy and one girl of George and Alice Thayer. He also leaves two brothers, Otis G. of Winterset, and Fred of Glendale, California, and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Fleck of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Nettie Vincent of Des Moines, besides a large number of relatives and a still larger number of sorrowing friends, who will miss his pleasant greetings and kindly ways more than can be told, for he was always going out of his way to do a kindness for friends and neighbors.
For more than fifteen years he has been superintendent of the county farm and home and has given the very best that was in him to not only operate the farm to the best advantage, but to make life a little better for the unfortunate people under his care and his place will be hard to fill in that capacity. His whole ambition was to help others. He lived Christianity by always being ready to go out of his way to do a kindness to some one even to almost strangers.
He was a consistent member of the I. O. O. F. and also the Knights of Pythias, but on account of his duties at the county home, he was seldom permitted to attend their meetings yet his daily life was an example to all the members and to the fraternal relations that should always exist between them.
Thus has passed a good man, a faithful husband and a more than indulgent father, not only to his own son but to the three near daughters.
His last act before his sudden passing was one of loving and kindly service for his faithful wife.
