J. S. Devault
Nov. 12, 1857 - Jan. 26, 1920

J. S. or "Straud" Devault, whose serious illness from paralysis was noted last week, passed away at 8 o'clock Monday evening, never rallying from the attack on last Thursday morning. Later details of his sickness develop the fact that he had received a slight stroke on the day previous. He was at the farm in Jackson township having just returned from Omaha with a load of cattle. His son suspected the real gravity of his ailment, Mr. Devault having complained of a pain in his head and pain and partial disuse of his left leg. This was also noticed by his neighbors after returning to Winterset and is now thought to have been a forerunner to the second stroke from which he never rallied.

The funeral services were conducted from the home yesterday at 2 p.m. Rev. W. J. Stewart of the United Presbyterian church officiating assisted by C. E. Hawthorne of Pitzer and the Masonic order having charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. Devault was born near Iowa City in 1857, one of a family of eight children, three of whom still reside in this county. Besides the wife, two sons, Arthur and Clifford Devault, reside on the home farm of 320 acres near Pitzer.
