Leonard Parkins, retired farmer living in Winterset the last six years, died at his home Sunday, March 16, after a final illness of one week. He was 79 years of age, and had been in failing health since autumn.

Mr. Parkins was a native of Mahaska county, where he was born Sept. 11, 1867, the son of John and Elizah Parkins. He came to Madison county as a small boy with his parents, and they settled on a farm near Winterset, which was his home for many years.

His active life was spent in farming, and for 22 years he also operated a threshing machine in his community.

He was married Sept. 15, 1891, to Cora E. Bentley. They were the parents of seven children. Two sons and a daughter preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. C. C. Algoe of Peru, Mrs. Marion Cameron of Winterset, and Mrs. Charles Landers of Denver, Colo.; and a son, C. L. Parkins of Des Moines. He also leaves seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Paul Schoen of Miami, Fla., three brothers, Steve and Howard Parkins of Winterset and W. R. Parkins of Canada; and a half-brother, John Parkins of Creston.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Church of Christ, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Wilbur Watkins. Burial was made in the McDonald cemetery.
