Mortuary - George Henry Brown

George Henry Brown, pioneer of the middle west and founder of one of Lamar's, Colorado, leading industries, which bears his name, passed away in his Hollywood, California home Monday, June 18, shortly before midnight, after a long illness.

He was surrounded by friends and members of his family, including his widow, Mrs. Pauline Brown, his sons, William G. and John Y. Brown of Lamar; his daughters, Clara Brown, Mrs. Minnie Doak and Mrs. Leta Swanson, of San Francisco, and a grandson, Earl Brown. In addition to these Mr. Brown is survived by three grandsons, Glen K. Brown, George D. Brown and John Y Brown Jr., all of Lamar, and three granddaughters, Mrs. Alice D. Wehrkamp of Van Meter, Iowa, and Geneva and Betty Brown of Lamar.

His interment at the Hollywood Mausoleum was conducted under the direction of the Grand Lodge of California, Free and Accepted Masons.

George Henry Brown was born in Germany in 1847, and was taken to the United States in 1849 by his father, Martin Brown, a veteran of the Civil war. He spent his early life on the plains of Iowa, during the days when frontier days were rife wih hardship. He left the soil when a youth and went into building, mercantile pursuits and banking.

On February 8, 1876 Mr. Brown led to the altar Miss Pauline Burger, in Van Meter, Iowa. This union existed more than 52 years, until his death. Two years ago the couple celebrated in California their golden wedding anniversary, in the comfort of their California home, strongly contrasted to the dwelling occupied by them when Iowa was a frontier.

In 1906 George Brown took his family to Lamar, Colorado, and soon after established the lumber, milling and building business which has now expanded and has branches in Wiley, McClave and Holly. This same business, based upon the stern honest principles of the pioneer middle west, has prospered under his policies and those of his sons, William G. and John Y. Brown, who are now, with their sons, carrying on his work. Having trained two sons in his business, the elder Brown decided in 1915 to enjoy the remainder of his life in retirement, and with his wife and two daughters moved to Los Angeles, California.
