Josephine Melton was born July 20, 1853, in Knox County, Ill., and departed this life April 28, 1928, at the age of 74 years, 9 months and 22 days. When a little girl she with her parents moved to Madison County, west of Winterset where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Robert Duff on March 31, 1870. To this union were born six children, one of whom passed on in infancy.

She leaves to mourn her departure the aged husband, three daughters, Mrs. Velma Aitcheson of Pitzer, Mrs. Ella Rogan, of Dexter, Mrs. Myrtle Hockenberry, of Earlham; two sons, Newton Duff and Milton Duff, also of Earlham, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. J. R. Cowden of Wensington Springs, S. D.

Mrs. Duff united with the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church in 1890. Later she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian Church at Earlham.

She lived a beautiful Christian life, loved her home and the church. Her health often prevented her from attending church services. Her happier moments were those in service for others. She had the blessed faculty of seeing only the good in people, overlooking and condoning their faults and shortcomings.

During her last illness, which extended over a period of ten years, her patience and cheerful outlook on life were remarkable. She was a good wife, a loving mother, a faithful friend, and a kind neighbor. She will be greatly missed in the home circle and by a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the home at two o’clock Sunday afternoon by Rev. Bock assisted by Rev. Porter, pastor of the U. P. Church, Winterset. The sermon based on the 23rd Psalm. “Abide With Me” was sung by a mixed quartet, Will Price, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Schifflett and Mrs. Lucile Schalkle. Interment was in Earlham cemetery.
