Word has been received here of the death Saturday of Dr. Jesse (sic) M. DeFord, 82, widow of the late Dr. W. H. DeFord, at Ontario, Cal.
Both were pioneer Iowa dentists and Mrs. DeFord was the first woman to be graduated from the dental college at the State University of Iowa. The couple maintained an office together here.
Dr. W. H. DeFord died here in 1932. He was a former dean of the Drake university college of dentistry and occupied the chair of oral pathology and oral hygiene at the State University of Iowa.
Mrs. DeFord left here in October to spend the winter in California.
Her survivors are a brother, J. Terry Ritchie and two sisters, Emily and Jennie Ritchie, all of Des Moines. Services are expected to be here.
_________________________Transcriber's note: The deceased came with her parents to Madison County in 1877 (about age 9) and was present in the 1880 and 1885 Madison County Censuses. Transcribed as published, her maiden name is "Jessie Ritchey" per her gravestone.
