Madison county lost one of its most prominent citizens early Tuesday in the death of Eugene Wilson, who succumbed suddenly to a heart attack at his home in Winterset. He was 72 years of age.

Mr. Wilson had been a resident of Winterset since 1908, and was widely known through his varied activities as banker, automobile dealer, grain buyer, and other lines of business. He had also served two terms as mayor of Winterset.

Mr. Wilson was born just over the line in Adair county, west of Macksburg, on Feb. 12, 1871. He was the son of Jerry and Laura Darby Wilson, well-to-do farmers of that community. He was educated at Highland Park college in Des Moines, and for a time farmed in Grand River township. He next moved to the home place, which he farmed until 1908, when he moved to Winterset.

In Winterset he started in the real estate business, then the automobile business, and next the grain elevator business. Following that he served several years as cashier of the old First National bank, retired from that to take the Ford automobile dealership in Winterset.

He next went to Macksburg to serve as president and cashier of the Macksburg National bank. After returning to Winterset he served as local representative of the Federal Farm Loan association. At the time of his death he was serving as clerk in the state liquor store in Winterset.

He served as mayor of Winterset in 1915 and 1916, and again in 1939, and 1940.

Mr. Wilson was married Dec. 14, 1897, to Miss Pearl Rowe of Macksburg. They were the parents of two children, both of whom survive their father.

He leaves his wife; the daughter, Mrs. Winter Mackey of Winterset; the son, Wyman Wilson of Chicago; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lester Walker of Macksburg, and Mrs. Elmer Marsh of Columbus, Kan.; and a brother, Clarence Wilson of Nevada.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this Thursday, from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. P.R. Stevens, pastor of the Capital Hill Church of Christ, in Des Moines. Burial will be made in the Moon cemetery at Macksburg.

DIES OF HEART ATTACK TUESDAY

A Long Business Career Is Ended For Eugene C. Wilson

A heart attack early Tuesday morning proved fatal and ended the long business career of Eugene Wilson, permanent Winterset citizen for the past thirty-five years. Mr. Wilson was 72 years old and while it was known that he was not in the best of health, he had been active at his work and apparently feeling well right up to the minute of his death.

Mr. Wilson came to Madison county about thirty-seven years ago where he was employed in a hardware and implement business and Macksburg. In a short time he moved to Winterset where he entered the real estate business and started his long business career here. While in Winterset Mr. Wilson was associated with the late Elmer Orris in the Palace Garage and later operated a grain elevator here. He was in the banking business for a number of years serving as cashier of the old First National Bank and operated the Wilson Motor Company, a Ford Agency. He was also in the banking business at Macksburg.

Mr. Wilson served as mayor of Winterset on two different occasions and was a member of the Masonic, Odd Fellow and K. of P. lodges.

His later years were spent in real estate and farm will work and most recently he was employed by the Iowa Liquor Commission in their state store here.

Eugene C. Wilson was born in Adair County in 1871, the son of Jeremiah Morgan Wilson. He spent nearly half of his lifetime farming in Adair County. He was married on December 14, 1897 to Pearl Pennel Rowe of Macksburg and three children were born to the couple.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Winter Mackay; Jean, Marcia, Jimmy and Jerry Wilson. He is also survived by one brother, Clarence of Hawthorne, Nevada and two sisters, Sybil Marsh of Columbus, Kansas and Mamie Walker of Orient.
