OBITUARY

Died, at her residence, near St. Charles, Madison County, Iowa, on Wednesday evening, August 10, 1881, Mrs. Mary Brown, wife of Capt. J.M Brown, aged 48 years. Mrs. Brown’s last illness was of short duration, although she had not been well for a few days previous. On attempting to awake her on Tuesday morning, she was found to be unconscious, and remained in that condition except for a few moments, until her death on Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Brown was a native of Ohio and was married to J.M. Brown of Union county, in that state in 1852. A few years afterward, they removed to St. Charles till the time of her death. Mrs. Brown was an active women in all departments of life. What she did, she did with all her might. Indeed, her energy and activity was beyond the degree of strength she possessed.

She was devoted to her friends and family—a loving companion and kind mother. She was active in relation to the church of which she was a member and especially she was a worker in the great cause of temperance, being a member of Woman’s Christian temperance Union. Her last visit to Winterset on the Saturday previous to her death was to attend a meeting of that organization.

She was buried Friday evening in the lonely churchyard west of town beside a loved son and daughter. The funeral services were held at her late residence and were conducted by Rev. Raitt, assisted by Rev. Wallace of Winterset and Stewart of St. Charles. She was a resident of that community for about twenty-five years. She will be much missed especially by her bereaved husband and only son and an adopted daughter. Her place in church and Sabbath school was seldom ever vacant when health permitted, and there she will be especially missed.
