Page 7A GOOD MAN DIES
Elijah Jones, who has been gradual weakening for several years, passed away from the immediate effects of an attack of pneumonia Saturday night, December 2. He had rallied so many times before from serious attacks of sickness that his family and friends hoped that his naturally strong constitution, unimpaired by dissipation or excesses of any kind, would carry him through this sickness, yet his physician told him they should prepare for the worst for his heart was very weak. Consequently his family were all sent for, and he had the satisfaction of seeing them all before his death. Besides his wife and children, his brother, Basil Jones, from Pitzer, and a brother-in-law, Fred Lenocker, from Dexter, were with him before the end came.
The deceased was born in Holmes county, Ohio, September 16, 1831. He was one of a family of ten children of Wm. and Rebecca (Skilles) Jones. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Lenocker in Holmes county, Ohio, October 15, 1857. In two years, Mr. and Mrs. Jones would have celebrated their golden wedding together had his life been spared that long.
There were born to this union four sons and four daughters. One of the sons died in infancy. The surviving children are W.B. Jones of Earlham; M.D. Jones, south of town; Villa, wife of John Chamber, of Greenfield; Ella, wife of J.F. Pease, of Earlham; John Jones, who lives on the old Jones homestead in Harrison township; Alma Jones, who lives at home and is one of the grade teachers in the Stuart schools; Gertrude Silverthorn, of Greenfield. The deceased leaves also three brothers and one sister living.
The family came to Harrison township, Adair county, in 1871 and settled on the farm that they have occupied ever since until they moved from the farm to Stuart. Mr. Jones was a large landowner and an excellent farmer and died in the possession of over a section of well-improved land divided into two farms. He also owns a good town property. But it was not the ambition of the deceased to obtain great riches or land possessions, but rather to live an honorable, upright and helpful life.
Under the guidance of a christian mother, he early united with the Christian church and his life has always been guided and enabled by the consciousness of his responsibility to his God and his fellowmen. He was one of the founders of the Fairview Christian church, which was established a quarter of a century ago in a neighborhood of farmers near his home. He has always been one of the most helpful workers in church and Sunday school. He has been active in the civic affairs of his township and county. For years he was one of the justices of the township.
Among his neighbors, he was the counselor and adviser who was sought if the matters of the community needed the help of the calmest judgment of its best men. He was kind-hearted, tolerant, frank and always considerate of others. Such a man is easily the leader and most loved of his community. That is why there was such a large gathering of sincere mourners at the funeral Monday. They all felt that a friend and counselor had left them, and they were anxious to show him this last mark of respect.
Mr. Jones was an honored member of Stuart lodge I.O.P.F. and one of its most devoted workers. He was a past grand of the subordinate lodge and a past chief patriarch of the encampment, honors that he was richly entitled to. He was buried with the full honors of the order.
There was a brief funeral service at the late home of the deceased in this city conducted by his pastor, Rev. Adair. But the principal service was held at the Fairview church by Rev. Lewis. His remains were laid to rest in the churchyard with those of many of his neighbors.
The following people from out of town attended the funeral: Mrs. H. Lenocker, G.F. Lenocker, H. Lenocker, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Fitting, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Lenocker, Mrs. And Mrs. J.H. Lenocker, Guy Lenocker, Dexter; Mr. and Mrs. John Feitz of Earlham; Chester Jones, nephew, Des Moines; Al A. Lenocker, Oakland, Iowa; Basil Jones and family, and Dr. Bush and wife of Pitzer.
