James W. Gentry, a pioneer citizen of Madison county, died at Anamosa on Tuesday of last week and was buried here last Friday. He was 91 years of age.

Mr. Gentry had lived in Madison county near Winterset for 80 years. He was born here of pioneer parents on March 31, 1852, when there were but few settlers in the county. All of his life was spent here until 11 years ago. In recent years he had been making his home with his daughter, but she moved to California a few weeks ago. Mr. Gentry's active years were spent as a farmer in this community. He was married to Jane Porter, who died in 1911. He became a member of the Primitive Baptist church here in 1904, and was later ordained as a deacon.

He is survived by three children, Fred Gentry of Holland, Minn., Earl Gentry of East Tawas, Mich., and Mrs. Dave Smith, now of Richmond, Calif. He also leaves four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at Anamosa, and after the body was brought here, brief committment rites were held in charge of the Rev. L.F. Davis. Burial was made in the Hooten cemetery.

91-Year-Old man Buried Last Week

James W. Gentry, Anamosa, died in the Monticello hospital Tuesday, June 8. He was the father of Mrs. Dave Smith, Richmond, Calif., and made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Smith when Mr. Smith was a guard at the Reformatory before moving to California about a year ago.

Funeral service was held June 11 at Smykil funeral home with Rev. H. E. Dalrymple conducting the service. Burial was made in Winterset.

Mr. Gentry was more than 91-years-old, having been born March 31, 1852, at Winterset. He married Eliza Porter April 10, 1879. She died in 1911.

Also surviving are two brothers, Fred Gentry, Holland, Minn., and Earl Gentry, East Tawes, Mich.

JAMES W. GENTRY, 91, DIED JUNE 8

James W. Gentry, resident of Madison county for almost 90 years, died at Anamosa, Iowa, Tuesday night, June 8. He died at the age of 91 years. Funeral services were held at Anamosa on Thursday, June 10, and interment was made at the Hotten (sic) cemetery southwest of Winterset, with Rev. Davis in charge.

James Wesley gentry was born in Madison county and lived here all of his life except for the past two years when he lived in Anamosa. He served as deacon in the Primitive Baptist church, north of Winterset. He was married to Jane Porter of Peru and to this union were born three children. Mrs. gentry preceded him in death in 1911, and since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Dave Smith, who lived in Earlham until six months ago. His three children were present at the funeral.

He is survived by three children, Mrs. Dave Smith of Richmond, Calif., Fred gentry of Holland, Minn., and Earl gentry of Michigan; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many friends.
