Wm. Thornburg

Wm. Thornburg was born in Licking county, Ohio, Feb. 25, 1834 and departed this life June 10, 1914 aged 80 years 3 months, 15 days. He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1847, where he afterward spent the remainder of his life.

On February 14, 1859, he was married to Elizabeth Roby, who preceded him in death Oct. 25, 1912. To this union were born thirteen children, 8 girls and 5 boys; Mrs. Dora Reeves, who died in 1897, Mrs. John Clampitt of Lawrence, Kansas; B.F. Thornburg of De Soto, Iowa, Mrs. Joe Weaver, Silver City, Iowa; J. C. Thornburg of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Mrs. Ida Adams, Mrs. Joe Cooper, Mrs. C.A. Hill, and W. E. Thornburg all of Winterset, Iowa and Mrs. A. Jackson, who died in 1903, besides three dying in infancy. Of the eight living, seven were with him during his last illness.

Besides his children he leaves to mourn, three brothers and one sister, Lewis of Winterset, Benjamin A. of Wick, George of Oakdalle, Nebr., and Mrs. Tom Tedford of Madison, Nebr.; thirty-nine grand children and seventeen great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends.

In August, 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War, where he served two years and ten months. He was wounded in the right hip during the battle of Parker's Cross Road Dec. 31, 1862, and came home on a furlough, June, 1864, and was mustered out in June, 1865. he was converted and joined the U.B. church in 1886, after which time he lived a consistent Christian life and died in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The funeral was held from his late home, Friday, June 12th at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. F. Wallace of Truro, under the auspices of the G. A. R. Pitzer Post 55, of which he was a member. Burial in the Winterset cemetery.
