Obituary – Mrs. J. M. Strawn

Nellie, oldest daughter of George and Roxanna Bumbarger, was born near New Virginia, Iowa, September 12, 1878, and passed away at her home in Indianola on June 10, 1941, aged 62 years, 8 months and 29 days.

Her childhood and youth were spent on a farm near St. Charles, Iowa.

On February 16, 1898, she was united in marriage to Jahu Strawn. To this union ten children were born, five sons and five daughters. One daughter and three sons have preceded their mother in death.

In 1910 Mrs. Strawn united with the Church of Christ at St. Charles. In 1920 when the family came to reside in Indianola her church membership was transferred to the First Baptist church here.

Mrs. Strawn’s chief interests in life were her home and family. She was always thoughtful and considerate of others. She especially enjoyed family gatherings when her loved ones were all together.

For the past several years she had been in failing health. Last fall, however, her condition became more serious. Since the first of the year her condition has been critical. Death came as a welcome release from the suffering of the past few weeks.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, J. M. Strawn; her mother, Mrs. Roxanna Bumbarger, of Indianola; six children, Ernest of Des Moines, Bruce, Mrs. Deane Chapman, of Des Moines, Gladys, Mrs. Clyde Hardin, of Montgomery, Ala., Dorothy, Mrs. Herbert Waldock, of Chicago, Norma, Mrs. Gerald Cornick, of Mt. Union, and Paul of Indianola. She also leaves nine grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Souders of Osceola and Mrs. Arthur Haworth of Indianola; three brothers, Walter Bumbarger of Osceola, Harry Bumbarger of New Virginia, and Wesley Bumbarger of St. Charles.

Besides of these she leaves a number of nieces and nephews, and other more distant relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12, at the Orr Funeral Home, the Rev. Carl J. Spieker, officiating.
