Dr. J. C. Parish Died In Los Angeles. Taught Here In 1903 and 1904

Dr. John Carl Parish, instructor in the Winterset schools in 1903 and 1904, died at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., last week. He was the author of the University of Iowa’s song, “Old Gold”, and was editor of the Palimpsest, Iowa historical publication for two years.

While teaching in the Winterset schools, Dr. Parish was one of the organizers and charter members of the Madison County Historical society. His death leaves only one living member of the nine charter members in the local chapter.

After leaving Winterset, Dr. Parish entered the University of Iowa where he majored in history. He wrote several biographical sketches of early prominent characters in Iowa and later studied in France and Spain, writing a historical novel. He spoke before the Madison County Historical society after he had gone to Los Angeles where he was a professor of history at the University of California at Los Angeles from 1922 until his death.

He is survived by his wife and a sister, Mrs. Byron J. Lambert of Iowa City, Ia.
