Wednesday, May 17, 2023Dean K. Veltman, age 95, died April 27, 2023, at his home in Penney Farms, Fla. Dean, son of Dr. John F. and Esther Veltman, was born in Winterset, Iowa, on Nov. 13, 1927.
He attended Winterset schools, then graduated from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary, both in Holland, Mich. He was ordained a minister in his home church, Winterset United Presbyterian Church on Court Avenue.
Dean served as a career chaplain with both the Marines and the Navy, aboard US Navy ships, in Europe and the Far East. He retired after 21 years in the Navy to Hinton, WV, where he served three country churches. Dean and his wife, Mary, moved to Florida, finally settling at Penney Farms.
Dean loved his Winterset hometown! He gave the commencement address for the Winterset High School Class of 1971, enjoyed family picnics at the City Park, and riding around town, showing his extended family his favorite spots. Dean proposed to his wife, Mary, at Clark Tower.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marian Agnew; and wife, Mary.
Survivors include his four children and their families, Carol Kariotis, John Veltman, Jim Veldman, and Cathy Dupont; two sisters, Kathy Parkins of Loveland, Colo., and Lois Slade of Leon, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held later with burial next to his wife in Penney Farms Cemetery.
