County News - St. Charles

Alfred James, Cassius E. and Walter D. Downs, Mrs. Zella Downs, Miss Ambrosha Downs and Carl Downs went to Ottawa, Kansas, to attend the funeral of Charles M. Downs, whose death occurred Monday, May 17. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, all returning Thursday.

Charles Downs was born and reared in this community and left here about 30 years ago, first living in Missouri, later moving to Potwin, Kansas, and recently moved to Ottawa, He was the seventh child and fourth son of David and Elizabeth Hartman Downs who were early pioneers of South township, coming from Indiana in 1851.

He was married to Emily B. Fife, daughter of Samuel and Frances White Fife, also early pioneers of South township, Mr. Fife coming in December 1849.

Mr. Downs was 70 years of age and leaves his wife, a foster daughter, and four brothers, A. R., James, C. E. and W. D. of St. Charles, also many nephews and nieces.
