County Briefs – Peru

Frances Brown, who died at his home in Osceola, was brought here Tuesday for burial. He lived on a farm northeast of Peru 30 years ago. A daughter, Mrs. Newt Weaver, was a former resident here.

F. M. Brown

Funeral services for F. M. Brown, well known Clarke county resident, were held from the Webster Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. C. McCallon. Mr. Brown passed away at his home near Osceola Sunday following a long illness.

Francis M. Brown, son of Hugh and Susan E. Brown, was born in Mercer county, Illinois on January 5, 1850.

He was married to Frances M. Meek, December 21, 1882, at Aledo, Ill. To this union were born eleven children: Fred S. Brown of Weston, Wyo.; Rilla Weaver Valley Junction, Ia.; Edd A. of Weston Wyo.; Carrie Stallings of Aledo, Ill., Olive F. McGee of Humeston, Ia.; Lewis M. of Spokane, Wash.; Francis M. of Coulee Dam, Wash.; James A. of Detroit, Mich.; and Mary Stills of New Virginia. Hugh M. preceded him in death March 3, 1934 at the age of 32 years; also an infant daughter, Fannie Opal, at the age of four months, February 24, 1907.

He grew to manhood at the place of his birth and lived there until 1901 at which time he moved to Winterset and spent the remainder of his life in Warren and Clarke counties, with the exception of three years, 1907 to 1910 spent in Mercer county, Ill.

He leaves to mourn his passing besides his children, two brothers, J. Webb Brown and Hayes W. Brown; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Simms and Mrs. Vesta Carlver, all of Mercer county, Ill.; 30 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

He united with the church in Viola, Ill. in the fall of 1908. He was a home loving, temperance man and will be greatly missed in his home and community.

Burial was made in the Peru Cemetery at the side of his two children.
