FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN SO. DAKOTA

Ellis Barker, former well known Winterset boy and citizen, died at Rochford, South Dakota, in January. Ellis was born in Winterset, the son of Jerry Barker who had a jewelry store on the south side for many years.

Jerry Barker planted the big hard maple tree which yet stands on the south side of the court house lawn. The tree was planted across the street from the Barker store after the first court house was built.

The family was prominent in all the early affairs of Winterset and after the Civil war. Ellis was a member of the Winterset baseball team ’77 to ’84. He was married to Jessie Adams, daughter of Burl Adams. They have lived in South Dakota since their marriage.

BARKER FUNERAL HELD IN ROCHFORD

Rochford, Jan 27 – Funeral services were held here Sunday for Ellis Luther Barker, 74, who died at his home in Rochford last Friday. Burial was in the cemetery here. The Rev. Dan J. Rueb, pastor of the First Baptist church at Deadwood officiated.

Barker was born in Winterset, Iowa in 1862. He was married to Jessie Fremont Adams in 1884. For several years the barkers lived in Nebraska where he was a watchmaker by trade. They moved to the Black Hills in 1902 and had made their home in the area since. Barker was engaged in several mining ventures.

Survivors include the widow, four daughters, three sons, 30 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Ellis Luther Barker

Funeral services were held January 24 port Alice Parker, aged Rochford resident who died quite suddenly January 22. Parker had apparently been in good health.

Ellis Luther Barker was born in Winterset, Iowa, March 21, 1862 and lived there until young manhood. He was united in marriage to Jessie Fremont Adams in September 1884 to which union was born four boys, and four girls, seven of whom are still living. One boy and a girl died in 1921. The family lived in Nebraska in the early days and came to the Black Hills in 1902 and have resided here since that time.

Mr. Barker was a watchmaker in trade and worked at this business until we came to South Dakota where he has been interested in mining work. He leaves his wife, four daughters, three sons, 30 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Reub of Deadwood officiated at the funeral and burial was in the Rochford cemetery. – Hill City News. Rochford, South Dakota
