August 1923Obituary of Evan Garrett
The psalmist has said, "The days of our years are three score years and ten," but Evan Garrett had lived more than a score of years longer then the allotted time for he was almost ninety-two years old.
He was born October 31, 1831 in Belmont County Ohio and died at his home in Earlham August 24, 1923.
In his early manhood Evan Garrett was married to Lydia Hockett who passed on twelve years ago leaving her husband a lonely man.To this union were born seven children all of whom are living with the exception of the second son, Adalaska, who died more than twenty-two years ago. Those living are Manary Garrett, of Earlham, Mrs. Viola Haxton and Mrs. Rose Johnson both of Gotebo, Oklahoma, Mrs. Walter Ramsey, Elizabeth and Myrtle Garrett of Earlham.
The home life of Evan Garrett was a contented one and as contentment furnishes continual joy, his love for and his pride in his wife and children was a constant source of enjoyment.
Cheerfulness was one of his outstanding characteristics and as happiness seems made to be shared, his friends will long remember his hearty laugh that made glad a heavy heart and turned a day of gloom into one of joy.
Long ago in the days of his youth and strength, when a hired nurse was unknown and each vicinity cared for its own sick, Evan Garrett was ever ready to minister to his friends and neighbors and was eagerly sought far and near on account of his adaptiveness and proficiency in the sick room. No one enquired in vain for he was always ready and willing to sacrifice his time and energy for those about him.
During a severe illness last winter he told his daughters he was ready and willing to go and had no fears. He had no church membership but prefered the Friends church to which his family belonged.

EarlhamThe funeral of Evan Garrett, who died at his home Friday, was held on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Nelson, assisted by Mrs. Ella Newlin, had charge of the service. The floral offerings were very beautiful.
Mr. Garrett was almost 92 years old and had been an invalid for many months, making his going away all the more noticeable and the loss greater than if his absence from home was a usual occurrence. Mrs. Garrett died 12 years ago and a son, Adalaska, 22 years ago. The children are Manary Garrett, Mrs. Walter Ramsey, Elizabeth and Myrtle Garrett of Earlham; Mrs. Chas. Haxton and Mrs. George Johnston of Okobo, Okla. A good man is gone, who will be much missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
