Lydia Hockett Garrett

Lydia Hockett Garrett was born in Randolph County, Indiana, September 27, 1834 and died at Earlham, Madison County, Iowa, January 31, 1911, age 76 years, 4 months, and four days. While a child she moved to Henry County Iowa.

She united in marriage to Evan Garrett in 1857. To this union was born seven children, two sons and five daughters as follows: Menary Garrett of Desoto, Iowa, Adalaska Garrett, deceased, Mrs. Viola Haxton, Gotebo, Oklahoma, Mrs. Rose Johnson, Perry, Iowa, Elizabeth Garrett, Earlham, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Ramsey, Perry, Iowa and Myrtle Garrett, Earlham, Iowa.

In 1868 they moved to Dallas County Iowa, from whence they moved to Earlham about seven years age. Mrs. Garrett has been in failing health for the past year and during the past month she has lingered between this life and the great beyond only waiting, as she herself often said, the time the will of the Saviour should call her home. Through all her suffering she manifested the Spirit of Him who prayed "not my will but thine be done." Bitter through the cup of her suffering was, the will of her master was sweet to her. Her faith was strong. Truly God was her strength, for she never complained.

She was a life long Friend, having a birthright membership in the church. When a young lady she was always faithful in church attendance and never seemed to think of self but was constantly doing something for some one else. There was a total lack of ostentation about her life. It was not so much what she said but what she did. She was a good mother in the very highest and best meaning of the word. Always cheerful she scattered sunshine all around her. Her aged companion mourns the loss of a true and faithful wife, her children the loss of a kind mother and the community a good neighbor and friend.
