Herbert L. Johnson, 79, of Duncombe, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Rev. Keith Putney will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Carson Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 6, 2011, at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter.

Herbert Lester Johnson was born on August 28, 1931, in Madison County, Iowa, the son of Byron and Bessie (Bowlsby) Johnson. He graduated with the Earlham High School class of 1949. In 1951, Herb was united in marriage to Mary Evelyn Strong in Earlham. To this union four children were born. Herb served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954, and worked in the Pentagon. Upon his return to Iowa, he began his career in the transportation industry. During this time he received his Bachelor's Degree from Drake University. In 1973, Herb was married to Deone June Brooks, who passed away in 1995. On November 22, 1997, Herb married Patricia Ann Peterson at the Dayton United Methodist Church.

Herb belonged to the United Methodist Church in Dayton. He was also an avid boater and Ham radio operator, going by the call sign of W0RCW. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Johnson of Duncombe, Iowa; one daughter, Kathleen (Rick) Donalson of Poway, California; three sons, Michael (Jenell) Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Larry (Jody) Johnson, and Brian (Julie) Johnson all of Ankeny, Iowa; three step-children, Wendy (Gary) Myers, Lanny (Carol) Bauer, and Whitney (Dan) Zatloukal all of Webster City, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and nine step great grandchildren; one brother, Harold (Mary Lou) Johnson of Ankeny, Iowa; and one sister, Berdena Jones of Earlham, Iowa.

His parents; and a grandson, Jacob Johnson, preceded him in death.
