Ruby Richard Smith Phillips

Ruby Richard Smith Phillips, age 88, was born at Earlham, Iowa, on October 3, 1921, to Perry and Hattie (Leach) Smith. She was the fifth of eight children. She passed away April 21, 2010, at Rolla Manor Care Center, Rolla, Mo.

The family moved to West Des Moines in 1927. She met David Phillips in 1936. They were married August 29, 1937, and to this union, three children were born, David F. Phillips Jr. on November 4, 1939, Sharron Dianne Phillips in 1941 but died as an infant and Samuel John Phillips on September 11, 1950.

After they were married, they lived at Booneville, Iowa, and then moved to Norwalk to be closer to work during the war years. David worked for Boyt Harness Shop, making holsters and leather packs for the military, and Ruby worked at an ammunition plant at Ankeny, Iowa. They moved to the farm at Cummings in 1944 and farmed it until January 1949. They sold their holdings in Iowa and bought a stock farm near Success. Ruby lived on the farm until after David’s death in February 2001. Ruby enjoyed her garden, flowers, fishing, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Mary Harris, Caroline Crews, Esther Patterson, Dorthy Hensler, Marjorie Rowe and Lanelle Poole; one brother, Perry M. (Bud) Smith and her husband, David F. Phillips, Sr. Ruby is survived by her sons and their wives, David F. (Dude) Phillips, Jr. and Gearldine L. (Jerrie); Samuel John Phillips and Lovie Ludena; five grandchildren; 13 great-grand children; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Winnona Terry.

Services were Saturday, April 24, in the Roby Christian Church with Eugene Earp officiating. Burial was in Palace Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to World Harvest Church.
