February 2022Terry Lee Merical, 84, died Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at his home in Altoona, Iowa following a series of illnesses.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) in Ankeny, IA. A memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, also at the funeral home. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery in DeSoto, IA. The memorial service will be livestreamed at the following link: vimeo.com/673251770
Born in Earlham, Iowa, Terry graduated from Grimes High School in 1955. Terry enlisted the US Army and served from 1955 to 1958 and was stationed in France. Upon his return from the Army, Terry was married to Sandra Shediwy in 1959. Terry and Sandra lived in Des Moines and moved to Oskaloosa in 1968. Terry joined Iowa Power and Light (now MidAmerican Energy) in 1958 as a truck driver. He went on to become a lineman and a foreman, and retired as the area manager of the Oskaloosa service area in 1995. Following Sandra’s retirement in 1997, Terry and Sandra began wintering in Apache Junction, AZ until 2000 when their winter home became Florida. Terry was an avid hunter and fisherman during his working years and spent a lot of time fishing in retirement. He loved spending time with his family and his dog Libby, traveling, camping, driving his Jeep, and wearing shorts year around. Terry was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Oskaloosa Kiwanis.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Sandra Merical; his sons, Andrew (Becky) Merical, Matthew Merical, daughters Linda (Doug) Van Wyk, and Samantha Wonderlich. Terry leaves 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, brother Charles (Buzz) Merical and sister Bev Pollpeter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Lola Merical; sister, Sue Hinderaker; mother and father-in-law, James and Allegra Shediwy and great-granddaughter Abigail Ruddy.
Memorial donations may be made to Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House.
