Douglas M. Woods - West Des Moines

Douglas Montgomery Woods passed from this life on December 26, 2021. Doug was born on June 22, 1945 to Paul L. and Vivian (Price) Woods and raised in West Des Moines, Iowa. Following his graduation from Valley High School he joined the Air Force and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Many special friendships were forged with his Air Force buddies that lasted his lifetime. Upon returning home he went to work as a flight instructor at the Des Moines Airport and in 1971 he married Joy Fortune. One son, Paul Douglas Woods, blessed this union. Douglas also became interested in law enforcement pursuing a position as a deputy in Madison County, IA. He went on to continue a 25 year career as a police officer with the West Des Moines Police Department and retired in 1999. His second marriage was to Pam Iverson in 1983 and he was a step father to Yale, Reed and Kelly.

Douglas interests included a continued love of flying, a lifelong hobby of trains and an avid enthusiasm for sports cars. He was delighted that his grandson, Jackson Douglas Woods, shared his passions. Many Sunday afternoons were spent together cruising the open road in search of a train track to explore, a sports car show and often ending with a slice of his favorite pizza in Ames.

Douglas enjoyed meeting friends regularly for dinner at The Izaak Walton League and was passionate about numerous charities. He generously supported the DMARC Food Pantry, the Salvation Army and Water for Life to help drill and establish new wells providing clean and safe drinking water to the people of Haiti.

Those relatives preceding him in death are his parents and an infant brother, Kirby. Those left to cherish his memory are his son Paul Woods, daughter-in-law, Robin Woods, and grandson Jackson Woods along with a host of family members and friends.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2022, at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th St, Urbandale, IA 50322, with the funeral to follow at 2:00.
