Winterset, IowaJames McFarland, 91, of Winterset, passed away Monday, December 27, 2021 at Winterset Care Center North.
Family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home Winterset Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 3 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Penn Center Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
James Walter McFarland was born in Harrison County, Missouri, to Walter Wayne McFarland and Frances Aleen Smith McFarland, January 28, 1930.
Jim attended high school and graduated from Lamoni High School, class of 1948. On September 2, 1951 he married the love of his life, Ruth Ellen Patterson in Weldon, Iowa. They were married for 60 years. Together, they raised six children.
Over the years, Jim had many vocations including working in construction, running heavy equipment, sales, farming and welding. After being disabled, Jim developed a love for woodworking and is best known for his detailed, handcrafted D7 caterpillar tractor models made from native Iowa walnut wood. He and Ruth also enjoyed jam sessions with their friends, where Jim would play the “bones” also made from walnut.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth McFarland; his brothers, Jack, Douglas, Donald, Larry and Roger; sisters-in-law, Dorothy McFarland, Clara Ann McFarland, and Niada McFarland; a granddaughter, Jani McFarland Morrish; and great grandson, Charles Phillip Hornback.
Jim is survived by daughter, Cinda McFarland Long, husband David, son, James McFarland, wife Oy, son, Scott McFarland, wife, Mary Lou, daughter, Jo McFarland Runnells, husband Rich, daughter, Melissa McFarland Jaeger, husband Doug and son, Pat McFarland, fiancé Kathy Cross. Also, a sister, Linda McFarland Green, husband Harry; brother, David McFarland, wife Joy; sisters-in-law, June McFarland and Marie McFarland. Many grandchildren, many more great grandchildren and scores of nieces and nephews.
