Page 1, Column 6J. M. JOHNSTON, PIONEER RESIDENT OF CITY DEAD
Mr. J. M. Johnston, 84 years old, 913 Laurel street, a resident of Des Moines for 30 years and father of E. E. Johnston, for several years chief of detectives of this city, died Sunday afternoon.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from Newlin’s undertaking parlors, Fifteenth street and Woodland avenue.
Mr. Johnston was a veteran of the civil war. He enlisted with the Fourteenth Iowa infantry and participated in all the battles up to the battle of Shiloh, at which place all that was left of his company were taken prisoners. He was a member of the Crocker G. A. R.
He also leaves a daughter, Miss Orra Johnston.
