Ronald Junior “Chub” Wahlert was born during the Summer Solstice, on June 21, 1928 to Randel Porter and Irene Marie (Schirm) Wahlert. Ron was taken to his eternal rest, at the age of 92 years, on March 30, 2021. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, April 5, 2021 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 6 at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in Dexter City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dexter United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be live streamed and may be found at facebook.com/johnsonfamilyfh.
Ron grew up and spent his entire life near Dexter, Iowa. He attended Dexter Public School where he graduated in 1946. Participation in multiple sports proved Ron to be an exceptional athlete. Shortly after finishing high school, he entered the US Army where he served a year with the occupational force in Japan.
Upon his return from overseas, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Norma Lee Lenocker, on April 10, 1948. To this union four children were born: Fran Wierson (Craig) of Waukee, IA; Bradley Wahlert (Melodie) of Cresson, TX; Rhonda Simmons (Dan) of Guthrie, OK; and Becky Dilbeck (Greg) of Stillwater, OK. His children all considered him to be a wonderful man, a great father, and will miss him dearly.
Ron leaves his adoring grandchildren: Chad Wierson; Cory Wierson; Allison Vaughn; Ashlee Loewen; JD Simmons; Cody Simmons; Jessica Dilbeck; and Danielle Dilbeck. Ten great-grandchildren were privileged to meet Ron and bask in the glow of his love before he departed this earth.
Ron spent nearly 73 years with Norma, the love of his life, at his side. Through hard work, diligence, and the sweat of his brow, he built a successful plumbing and heating business and also operated a small farm. Ron enjoyed tinkering with antique John Deere tractors, a habit acquired while working for a John Deere dealer during his high school years. Ron and Norma became “snowbirds” in their 50s and spent winters in Arizona, Florida, Alabama, and Texas during the ensuing years. After selling their home and remaining acreage, they became full-time “Road Warriors,” with a travel trailer serving as their primary residence for several years. In recent years they resided in an apartment in Earlham, IA and, up until 2015, still ventured to south Texas to enjoy a few months of warm weather.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Donna Belle Frank, and Diana Countryman; and brothers Ted and Russell. He is survived by his wife, Norma, and sister Dorothy Merical along with several nieces and nephews.
As Ron takes his daily stroll through those Heavenly streets of gold, we know he’ll be on the look-out for a shiny Model A John Deere tractor. It would be of no surprise to anyone that within 15 minutes of Ron’s arrival he’ll probably be sitting in on a game of Cribbage.
Ron, you lived your life well both by deed and example. Your family loves you, misses you, and knows we’ll all meet again! May you Rest in Peace.
